About Coppertop Customs
Born from the Outdoors. Built by Hand.
Coppertop Customs started with two things I’ve always loved: being outdoors and making things.
I’ve always enjoyed camping, fishing, bushcraft and getting out into the Scottish hills. I’ve also had an interest in knives for as long as I can remember. But it wasn’t until a friend showed me a custom-made knife on a camping trip that I really started looking at them differently.
I remember thinking how much character and craftsmanship went into making something like that. It wasn't just another knife it was something someone had actually made by hand. That got me thinking: I wonder if I could make one myself?
Then lockdown came along, and I had a bit more time on my hands.
I bought myself a garden shed, got hold of some basic tools and started having a go at making knives. To begin with, it was very much a case of learning as I went. There was plenty of experimenting, plenty of mistakes and quite a few lessons learned the hard way!
But I loved it.
Every knife I made taught me something new, and before long, what had started as a lockdown hobby began turning into something a bit more serious. And that's how Coppertop Customs came about.
These days, thankfully, the workshop looks a little different! I’ve upgraded the equipment quite a bit, so I’m no longer trying to make everything with the same handful of old files and basic tools I started with. The files are still there, though I’m not quite ready to admit defeat and get rid of them completely!
I still make every knife with the same hands-on approach, but now I’ve got the equipment to do the job properly and, more importantly, to keep improving what I make.
My knives are made for people who enjoy the outdoors as much as I do whether that's hunting, bushcraft, camping, scouting, fishing or simply getting out and enjoying some time in the wild.
For me, a good knife isn't just something that looks nice sitting on a shelf. It's something you should be able to pick up, use, rely on and enjoy. Hopefully, it'll become a piece of kit that gets taken on plenty of adventures and lasts for many years.
What started in a Scottish garden shed has grown into something I'm incredibly proud of.
